There is censure around positions outside of the bell curve (the Overton window I suppose it is called). I would argue that breadth of discussion is just one axis of the debate however. Participants use only rhetoric — verbal arguments attempting to connect the dots between an action and an outcome. It may very well be that the real world is simply too complex for us to understand and that the failure of different people in the United States to agree isn’t just based on ideology. Something deeper than “tolerance” may be needed — such as using a hybrid of human and machine reasoning to simulate possible outcomes of different policies given different starting assumptions.
